For the first time in awhile SCTA got away with a full year of racing, and for the first time in awhile I didn’t have a car to run. 6 meets at El Mirage, and a speedweek at Bonneville for the first time in a few years left me sitting on the sidelines to help out where needed with buddies cars and grab some pictures, luckily the motivation machine was running hard and I’ll be back next year with something of my own to drive. For now lets focus on the guys that were actually doing it this year.
Conditions for the last el mirage meet of the year weren’t great, having to reuse the course from May left things a little grooved out and some decent pot holes developed but that didn’t stop the records from rolling in, in fact a few of the fastest passes ever made on dirt went into the record books, including Brandon Leggitt’s 275.1 mph run in the B/CBFALT Studebaker, and Ralph Hudson once again bumping his own record to 266.3 on a 1000cc/APSBF motorcycle, that’s right 266mph on a bike, on the dirt. Damn. The big vintage class news of the meet was Ruth Lundring getting the V4/BGR record at 170.1mph, that’s a model a roadster powered by a model a engine albeit with a Volvo head conversion and blower that’s still moving for Henry’s old work horse, and that wasn’t the only case of banger speed at the lakes, Bobby Green finally got his El Mirage record he’s been searching for, with the Wild Turkey V4F/VOT (flathead banger vintage oval track) running 124.3.
Points championships came down to the last meet as well with the Hondata F/BGCC taking it for the cars, Chris Rivas 3000cc/APS-PBF knocking out the completion on the bikes and the Gear Grinders edging out the rest to take the club points race.
Can’t wait till next may to do it all over again, until then enjoy a years worth of race cars, bikes, hot rods, people, and general antics from this year at the lakes.
When you don’t have a car to race half the fun of Bonneville is the drive there and back, coming home I got detoured through Lucerne valley and Up and over Big Bear mountain, everyone wanted to know why I had Christmas tree flocking on my car…..
